Lost Mechanics: Morale

Feel Myanmar Food at Yangon

I wished I had done more research on Myanmar cuisine prior to my trip. I guess the hustle and bustle of the recently finished Yuletide holidays made me absentminded and dazed. I did, however, recall three restaurants cited by the Miele Guide but were of international cuisine. One served Italian dishes and no way will I eat pasta or pizza in Yangon.

On our last night in Yangon, I decided to join my friends for dinner at Feel Myanmar Food on Pyi Htaung Su Yeikthar Street. They have eight branches in Yangon and yet, our taxi driver got lost. Or perhaps, lost in translation with our instructions.

Its basically a food hawker's market although in this case, payment was centralized. A server would suddenly appear and take our orders. A lot of pointing and hand signals were done.

Feel Myanmar Food is popular among the locals and a great venue for trying out different Myanmar dishes.

Since verbal communication was exhaustingly futile at times, I decided to just point at what I wanted to eat without anymore bothering to find out what it was.

Condiments for Mohinga, the country's national dish.

I also ordered some soup from this stall.

The dessert display. Not really enticing but I had to try some.

Thai cuisine is quite popular in Myanmar so our choices were a mix of both. Sorry, I wasn't able to jot down the names of some dishes we got.

Some kind of soup with veggies and meat.

A chili salad with bean sprouts.

Fish fillet salad with chili galore. I remembered this one to be too hot for me.

We got two of this lovely grilled fish.

Som Tam or green papaya salad.

Soup with beef, greens and quail eggs.

Khao Pad or Thai fried rice.

Three desserts I chose. I was drawn to the one with multi-color layers which turned out to be simply gelatin.

My brother Gerry, Omon, Raffy and Mabelle. We were quite happy with our dinner. I apologize for not writing the cost of our meals because I admittedly forgot to take not. The food in Myanmar is very affordable and we've had meals much cheaper than in a SM Food Court.

A thermos of free hot tea. Being a tea drinker, I like this amenity. After this meal, it was time to call it a night since the next leg of our Myanmar trip required me to be up at 3 a.m.
