A tour across Kuresoi reminds one of the biblical promised land with breathtaking agricultural potential sites. The greenness and cold air depicts an area that receives high rainfall throughout the year. The region is bordered by forests; Bararget(north), Mau (South) and Kipkelion (west).Currently tree harvesting is rampant and government should ensure sustainability by enforcing reafforestation and locals to be given free or subsidized seedlings to entice them to plant trees on their farms. The chemical and physical properties of the soil accords this area diversity in livestock and crop production. The area is reknown in potato and tea production.Other crops that thrive well in the region are maize, beans, peas, pyerethrum , tomatoes, onions, beetroots, sunflower and fruits such as plums, papaya, pears, tree tomatoes, avocado , pumpkin, and passion fruits.Different livestock are also reared in the region ranging from dairy and beef cattle, sheep, goats, donkey , poultry and bees.
The area recently got economic boost from the famous itare dam which its construction is underway. The locals are pledging to the government to consider incorporating tourist attraction site to this dam so as to generate revenue.KTDA also should extend the tea belt between residents and forest from samburet area of kericho to kiptagich area .this will prevent forest encroachment and create jobs to locals as well as market to their tea.
A major plea rings in the air for establishment of colleges like teacher training college and polytechnics to aid in disseminating knowledge to locals. An agricultural institution should also be of consideration as the region is agricultural potential. The government should consider deploying extension officers to equip farmers with agricultural knowledge to boost agribusiness.
Despite all this lucrative endowment, the locals are disadvantaged by setbacks like expensive production inputs ,lack of market information, exploitative middlemen ,poor infrastructure and scarce knowledge on modern methods and technology in production. If the government invest in empowering residents, then the area can easily contribute in promoting national food security as well as creation of employment through income generating activities.
Apart from tea processing, also milk and honey processing can be viable in the area if leaders improves road network so as to attract investors .
Few milk cooling machines have been erected in the area by investors but owing to poor roads, the revenue gotten by farmers through milk sale is too low.Farmers should be encouraged and aided to form marketing cooperative societies to help them market their products like milk and potatoes.Such cooperatives should build potato cooling stores where they will temporarily store their produce as they wait for good buyers of higher prices.Such stores can be used also to supply inputs like seeds and fertilizer at lower prices to members.
To boost accessibility and mobility, the road from county council to Chepsir should be tarmacked.
